Stack App discontinued!
“I have to work extra hard as it is on creating things for the App Store, but when people like paniK go ahead and make my software available to pirates and I watch sales vanish overnight, it means I have to spend much more time on marketing and development for my App Store apps to try and offset my losses, leaving no time for projects like Stack that earn me nothing.” This is the reason, why the Stack App will be removed from Cydia within the next days. So be sure you download it, while you can! The developer also says: "I'm still planning on releasing Stack 2.2 [...] But it shan't get any updates".

Ever thought of accessing your mails offline while you are on the move? It might sound impossible but, thanks to Google – Gmail becomes accessible offline on Apple iPhone and Google Android phones. This latest development was showcased in the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain amidst much applause on Wednesday, 18th Feb, 2009.
Vic Gundotra, VP of engineering, Google demonstrated the mobile version of Gmail designed for both the iPhone and Google Android phones. The exception about this web-based application (for mobiles) is that besides accessing their email offline, it also brings support for Gmail's labels feature. Moreover, what makes this application unique is that it is browser-based and do not require any mobile software application downloads.
Offline Gmail Access – The Technical Concept
Much adulation has been received in the MWC, as Google showcased to the world this ‘technical-concept’ application of Gmail , which helps store information on the device it is used on - not only a user's data, but also the software itself.
The Gmail application from Google based on HTML5 (a new Web language) is supported by both iPhone and Android. Just as features rely on extensions in desktop, offline Gmail for mobiles is dependent on HTML5’s AppCache and database standards. This helped secure data availability during absence of internet connection, which means it requires no additional software downloads; which further ensures that the feature would work flawlessly across multiple operating systems just as long as they support HTML5.
However, the feature that is making people go gaga over the application is its capability to run on both Apple's iPhone and Google's Android mobile, without the installation of any application on the phone.
The soon to be launched Gmail web application, besides its breakthrough attribute of gaining offline email access, features a floating toolbar that tracks users' email browsing and also support for message labeling. The demonstration for this GMail web app was done on iPhone 3G and on a HTC Magic (T-Mobile G2) at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona. However, any details on the possible launch of this application have not been divulged.
Beyond Offline Gmail Access
Apart from offline Gmail access on Apple iPhone, the search engine giant also showed off an HTML5 built browser version of Google Maps on the Palm Pre which offered all the functionality of a native client. Even though no announcement has formally been made yet on when Google will make a world-wide release of these new features, but the mobile scenario is certainly poised at an interesting juncture.
Despite the global meltdown and a period of extreme financial uncertainties, Apple iPhone has registered a 245% sales growth in the year 2008. This is of course a very encouraging trend for all smartphone manufacturers. While Nokia still maintains the number 1 slot when it comes to smartphones with 43.7 percent market share, Apple iPhone has steadily managed to achieve the third position at 8 percent.
iPhone Sales Growth – On a promising note
Apple iPhone sales for the year 2008, which began on a promising note in the first quarter, suffer significant dip in sales during the fourth quarter. However, the worldwide demand for Apple iPhones can be sealed by acknowledging 3rd position in worldwide smartphone market and 245 percent growth, which is of course a commendable feat considering the adverse market conditions in the recent times.
In spite of Nokia’s dominance in the world of smartphones with almost 44 percent share, the sales rate have exceptionally deteriorated to 16.8% year to year in the third quarter. Similar are the consequences face by HTC and Samsung, which in spite of showing growth in smartphone market share the previous year, were nowhere in comparison to Apple iPhone’s growth and sales graph of 245%.
Industry sources believe that Apple iPhone in spite of the huge succes in promoting sale growth has to meet with a slowdown and subsequent losses in the last quarter especially in December 2008. This can be attributed to the absence of any new iPhone in the market during that period, to attract sales.
The sales graph dipped from 4.72 million in Q3 to 4.08 million in Q4. However, there was no less of enthusiasm in the iPhone Camp as all as it is all set to explore new horizons with new handsets and softwares like the iPhone 3.
Apple iPhones revives the smartphone market – The year ahead
It is undoubtedly clear that Apple has played a significant role in reviving the smartphone market. A recent research report from Gartner has confirmed the paradigm shift in the year 2008. Although, apprehension is high regarding a shrinking of the mobile market in 2009, there is a growing anticipation on the expansion of the smartphone market with Gartner predicting a growth of 28 percent while Informa Telecoms and Media predicting about 35.3% growth.
On further analysis of Apple’s success and the growing iPhones sale in 2008 at the rate of an astounding 245 percent, the success of the iPhone over smartphone giants like Nokia can be attributed to its absence from the yet to offer "iPhone-style" touchphone market. This is perhaps the reason why Nokia in spite of having an almost 44 percent market in fact lost 5.7% of the smartphone market, and 10% of its overall market share.
According to Gartner’s report, new products offering persuasive device experiences and touch interfaces are responsible for driving smartphone sales in 2008. This is perhaps one of the reasons why Apple iPhone in spite of registering a slowdown in sale in the Q4 due to dipping December sales still managed to gather more than 111% year to year; courtesy its Q3 sales.
Steve Troughton-Smith although elated at his new discovery is however, in no mood to take the credit as he believes it is all ‘by chance and default’ that he has landed up on this iPhone tethering feature. According to a latest statement from Senior VP for iPhone Software Scott Forstall, ‘Although the iPhone OS 3.0 supported Internet tethering, it was never made into an option’.
The Big Question
With the advent of iPhone’s new tethering feature has given scope to the big question – Are carriers such as AT&T equipped to bear the (quite huge) burden, tethering would create on its networks? The doubt however, is not without a valid reason. Just week before, iPhones almost crippled AT&T's 3G network; and just consider hundreds of thousands of computers connected to that same network; the carrier’s network is sure to wreck causing nationwide havoc.
Internet tethering available in jailbroken iPhone
A jailbroken iPhone comes readily available with Internet tethering. There are apprehensions that with the soon to roll out iPhone OS 3.0, Apple Inc. will make jailbreaking a difficult proposition. The dev-team at Apple Inc. has also announced the iPhone 3.0 to be absolutely ‘jailbreakable’, while for all those contemplating the use of the software-based jailbreaking system - Yellowsn0w, there is requirement for restraint to be exercised.
The tethering capability is rightfully the most compelling enterprise feature in iPhone 3.0; considering the advantage, it has by replacing the requirement of mobile broadband cards to our iPhone users. However, the suspense continues as to if AT&T, as the sole and exclusive carrier for iPhones in the United States will use the tethering feature. There is also conflicting reports as to whether or how much will be charged for the same.
High expectation from AT&T for tethering
Reports from reliable sources indicate that there are probabilities that AT&T will implement tethering, which however, will come with a price. However, industry sources are hopeful that charges if applied will be modest and affordable, considering the popularity of iPhones and the impact it has now on the AT&T is however, silent on its next move involving the internet-tethering feature in iPhones, amidst anticipation that free tethering will all of a sudden cut sales of air cards. This might consequently influence revenues at AT&T and the 25 other iPhone carriers in 80 countries (even outside the United States).
Experts opine that updated software, which is shipped to iPhone users, has the ability to transform the iPhone into a modem. This will in turn substitute the currently monthly expenditure of $60 incurred on laptop computers of those users.
The countdown to mark the 1 billion download for iPhone App Store, which began with much fanfare on April 10, 2009 ultimately managed to reach its finish line on April 23, 2009. It also ended the speculation about the lucky iPhone use who finally became the proud winner of the $13,000 booty in Apple stuff. The winner will receive from Apple $10,000 in iTunes credit, a 17" MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod touch, and a Time Capsule priced at a retail value of $13,746.
However, industry resources have quoted this as one of the finest moments for all the iPhone app developers who had a gala time selling their software on the platform – thanks to the brilliant marketing minds of the sponsors of the event. Yet, the application developers are worthy of being appreciated for making the iPhone world exciting and helping in transforming the iPhone OS into something enjoyable for all.
Little did one expect that the promotion announcement for the ‘One billion app download’ in early April would get such marvelous response, and gain such momentum to achieve the mark in a matter of just 13 days. Reports show that Apple had already predicted the ‘landmark day’ for the 1 billionth download as April 23, 2009 considering the current trend of roughly 5.1 million downloads per day, on an average.
As the world waited to witness the download of the one-billionth iPhone application, the D-day finally arrived on April 23, when the countdown page suddenly flipped to the webpage written ‘Thanks a billion.’, marking history being made with the just the flip of a switch by Apple Inc. The milestone is considered a landmark achievement and the many believe the ‘Thanks a billion’ note conveys the heartiest gratitude to the millions of people who have made this possible in only a matter of nine months.

Information sources reveal that Apple and Verizon (which supports CDMA technology) are in talks about launching a new device – one a light tablet-like device called iPhonelite; and another one is supposed to be heavy duty called the Media pad. While the iPhone lite version is said to be smaller and cheaper; the media pad version allows users to watch HD video, listen to music, and have fun with the help of touch screen.
Even though the news about this new iPhone device launch makes headlines, courtesy some leaked information passed on to BusinessWeek from Apple insiders; the authenticity of the devices launching this summer is yet to be ascertained.
There has been news about Apple’s meeting with Verizon about half a year ago about a Verizon CDMA iPhone in 2010. Many believe iPhonelite to be possibly the CDMA iPhone version in its initial stage. The other device Media pad allows users to view photos; users listen to music, and watch high-definition videos. The media pad is apparently smaller than Amazon's Kindle, although with a larger touchscreen.
Until now, AT&T was iPhone’s exclusive carrier and Verizon has always been the second option, primarily due to its CDMA background. Business analysts believe switching to CDMA would be expensive proposition for Apple iPhone. It would not only restrict Apple with a product exclusively suited to the North American market, but also curtail its business prospects.

However, it is also a fact that priceless moments are restricted to priceless seconds and therefore, the time available to take such shots is always limited. At the same time, the built-in camera in an
Snappy app for iPhone - Capturing Priceless Moments
Snappy iPhone application developed by Marc Vaillant is very much similar to qTweeter. The picture quality is similar as taken from any other app. One of the most striking features of this app is that it enables you to take photos while running any app on your iPhone screen without having to close it.
Apart from that, you can also take photos even if you screen is locked (just within a second or two) - all you have to do is to tap and hold the status bar to open the camera and you are ready to shoot a snap. Another interesting feature in Snappy is that it comes with an authority to the user to deny access from the lock screen due to security or privacy reasons.
More to come….
Snappy is undoubtedly the fastest camera app on the scene. However, what one misses at the moment is support for taking video clips in iPhone 3GS. Reports indicate that the developer, Marc Vaillant is working on bringing video features in the future version of Snappy. You can avail Snappy on Cydia for just $1.99 and it works only on jailbroken iPhones.
Therefore, it is mandatory to jailbreak iphone before you can use the application. If you haven’t yet done so, you can just log in to easyiphoneunlocking.com for quick service and support regarding your iphone unlocking or jailbreaking requirements.

We know that the Palm Pre and the Apple iPhone are two completely different devices. Both are desired devices in Canada. We took a bit of time to take a look at each and compare them.
The iPhone 3GS has a bigger screen (3.5 inches) vs. the Palm Pre’s 3.1 inch screen. They both have a 3 megapixel camera, although the Pre has an LED flash but lacks the auto-focus, video and editing capabilities of the iPhone. They both weigh the same at 135 grams, but the Pre is bigger (in length when open and in overall thickness). The AppStore is in a league of its own when it comes to applications. The App Catalog has about 30 available apps… while the iPhone has over 60,000 apps. Both has a 3.5mm headset jack but the iPhone can hold up to 32GB of memory, while the Pre can hold up to 8GB. Plus both are reputable when it comes to your contacts, calendar and e-mails. It just depends on how much you like typing on a physical QWERTY keyboard on the Pre, or the QWERTY touchscreen on the iPhone. Also, the iPhone has auto-correct and came in handy when typing. This is missing on the Pre.
When we tested the browser speed (both have WiFi) it was hit and miss. Sometimes the iPhone dominated and other times the Pre was surprisingly faster. Overall the iPhone was a few seconds faster but nothing to cry about. The accelerometer was also faster on the Pre and made for a better user experience. But the battery life was longer by hours on the iPhone 3GS over the Pre. Both also come with Google Maps. For sound quality I found the loudness to be better on the Pre but the quality to better on the iPhone.

Thanks , more soon!
they are coming back for round 2 with an update. Pics have surfaced of the
upcoming Pearl 9100… this has a codename of “Striker”. Gone is the trackball and
the trackpad has been installed. The 3G Pearl 9100 looks like a shrunken Bold
9700 all the way around except with no QWERTY keyboard but RIM’s SureType.
No word on when this is launching or the price point. You can probably bet it’ll
be around the $0.00 on a 3-year and that all the Canadian carriers will be
picking this one up.
Over the past few days the new Apple iPhone 3G S has been strapped to my hand. This new faster model is making it even more fun to have around. The 3G S version has a 600 MHz processor that puts the previous models to sleep. In addition, it comes with 256MB of RAM.
There is nothing truly different about the overall design of the iPhone, just faster and comes with more features. Comes in black and white and 16 GB or 32 GB models. This weighs a bit more and comes in at 135 grams, previous models weighed only 133 grams. This has a 3.5 inch display with a resolution of 480 x 320.
During this review we chose not to go into great detail of the entire iPhone, but only the key additions to the 3.0 operating system, such as the Voice Memo, Camera (auto-focus) and Video features (editing), compass, Cut Copy & Paste and Search.
What I really love about the iPhone is how incredibly easy it is to use. It has honestly been dumbed so far down any young child, even at the ripe age of 2 can pick this up and start using it.
